Sportfishing and Whale Watching Trips
Throughout California there are a wide variety of short trips available for Sport fishing, Whale Watching, Cruises and Special Events. They include both public and private trips, and range in length from a couple of hours to a couple of days. The half-day trips are usually 5-6 hours. The ¾ day trips usually leave about 6-7am and return about 5pm. In southern California, targeted catch includes white sea bass, bonito, calico bass, barracuda and 2 dozen other species – some up to 40 or 50 pounds. It’s not uncommon to make hundreds of catches on a trip! These excursions are great for beginners and provide lots of action!
In southern California, there are a number of routinely scheduled public excursions or day-trips, for which you can make advance reservations (recommended). You can checkout several discount options in San Diego here or in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas here. For discount options in other regions, click here, select your desired region, and enter "fishing" in the "Attraction Name" box.
If you prefer, you can book a private excursion where you’d be traveling with only your family, friends or co-workers. If you have a small group (or for a family), you might try one of the 6-pak options. Advance arrangements must be made for private excursions and for large groups. For these larger events, you also might want to check out our Event Charters, Yacht Charters or Boat Rentals pages.
The overnight and two-day trips obviously last longer -- and are usually less crowded (limited load). They travel to less-visited locations (islands and offshore waters) and are geared to target the larger game fish, which might include yellowtail, albacore tuna, yellowfin tuna, dorado, white sea bass and bluefin tuna. In fact, trophy-sized catches are very common on these trips. They’re great for anglers going on their first overnight. You might be surprised at all the amenities – comfortable sleeping areas, full service kitchens and snack bars, indoor seating, restaurant-style booths for meals, nice bath rooms and other amenities that make the entire journey fun and relaxing.
The five main terms you'll hear to classify sportfishing trips are: Private Charters, "Six-Paks," Open Party, Limited-Load Open Party, and Long-Range Fishing Charters.
Private Charters reserve the whole boat for your own group of friends, family or co-workers. The price will vary depending on the size of the boat, seasons, weekends or holidays.
"Six-Paks" are smaller boats usually from 35-40' that hold up to 6 people and are usually private charters.
Open Party means the trip is open to the public and the boat is usually filled to capacity. Half-day trips can take up to 60 passengers, but most are around 35. Open Party tuna trips take up to about 30 people.
Limited-Load Open Party is the same as open party, except the price per passenger is higher because they limit the number of people to provide more comfort. They are usually limited to about 15-20. This definitely a benefit for longer trips and does offer more personal attention from the crew.
Long-Range Sportfishing Charters are longer multi-day trips and usually leave from San Diego. They cover offshore San Diego, San Benito Island, Cedros Island, Guadalupe Island, Alijos Rocks and the waters off Baja and Mexico. Targeted catch includes: Albacore, Bluefin tuna, Yellowfin tuna, Yellowtail, Dorado and Wahoo. Click the following link for detailed info and an "Inside Look" at Long-Range Fishing Charters.
